NAMI-Yolo Monthly Meeting Calendar

Our monthly meetings are potluck dinners held on the first Wednesday of each month (except July and August). Dinner is at 6:30pm. Meeting and speaker program begin at 7:30pm. Everyone is welcome, NAMI members and nonmembers alike. You are invited to bring food to share but if this isn't possible, please join us anyway. If you would like to suggest a speaker or topic, please e-mail us. If possible, please help our friends in need by bringing a non-perishable food donation to help augment Yolo County food closets.

Guest speaker: Joshua Walters, Performing Artist and Mental Health Educator

Offered free to the public.  A donation of $5 is suggested.

  TOPIC:  "Madhouse Rhythm"
Joshua Walters is a comedian with bipolar disorder whose work explores language, creativity, beat-boxing and madness. His solo shows are a mash-up of comedy, intimate reflection and unpredictable antics. Funny, intense, sometimes unsettling, “Madhouse Rhythm” debuted to critical acclaim in 2008.

It has since played to sold-out audiences in San Francisco and Berkeley ’s Marsh Theater. A collage of Joshua’s experiences living with bipolar disorder, this performance includes beat-boxing, stand-up comedy and circus. Joshua is known to experiment with visceral and highly energetic forms which are yet deeply grounded in his background as a theater artist. “Madhouse Rhythm” is the story of someone who has flipped “inflicted” into “gifted,” and coined “mental illness” into “mental skillness.”

Joshua irreverently challenges traditional views of mental illness. His show has had great impact in the theater and mental health community and is now included as part of the Performance and Disability Studies curriculum at UC Berkeley.

When:  Doors open at 7:00PM with the performance starting at 7:30PM
