"Coming Unglued:
The Bipolar Home in Times of Trouble"

Some of the topics to be discussed:

  • The medical definition of bipolar disorder, including types, symptoms, results (hospitalization, incarceration, loss of relationships, drug/alcohol abuse and self-medication, etc.)
  • Challenges of the bipolar home -- dealing with extreme ambiguity, need for 'uber vigilance,' inability to reason with a person who is psychotic, reduced expectations for the loved one's achieving life goals, finding the right psychiatrist / medication mix / therapist, etc... (Focus will be on households with bipolar minor or adult children.)
  • Unique additional challenges brought on by today's difficult economy (job loss, foreclosure, reduced services, etc.)
  • Hope and recovery -- suggested interventions, new medical science, effective therapeutic approaches, etc.
